Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools

Pushout refers to the school to confinement pathways (policies, practices, conditions, and prevailing consciousness) that increase risk of future contact with the juvenile court and/or criminal legal system. Dr. Couvson’s scholarship and advocacy on this topic have informed activities to improve learning conditions for girls of color in school districts across the nation.

Why Black girls are targeted for punishment at school -- and how to change that

Around the world, Black girls are being pushed out of schools because of policies that target them for punishment, says author and social justice scholar Monique Couvson (formerly Monique W. Morris). The result: countless girls are forced into unsafe futures with restricted opportunities. How can we put an end to this crisis? In an impassioned talk, Couvson uncovers the causes of "pushout" and shows how we can work to turn all schools into spaces where Black girls can heal and thrive.

Testimonials

“Monique’s vision for our girls is powerfully expansive. She's an inspiration to me and to all of us working to unleash their infinite potential.”

Beverly Bond, celebrity DJ and founder of Black Girls Rock!

“[Monique presents] a road map for educators and policymakers who want to address the unique ways in which black girls are placed in the school-to-prison pipeline.”

Erica L. Green, The New York Times

“Despite increased attention to the mass and over-incarceration of Black men, the plight of criminalized Black women and girls is overlooked, underreported, and under-analyzed. Finally, a compelling narrative that tells us the heartrending story of how schools are culpable in re-victimizing some of our most vulnerable citizens. This is a must-read for educators, juvenile justice officials, parents, and the entire community.”
